The core is the difference. Laminate is built on a wood-fiber board that swells permanently once water gets into it, which is why it is a poor choice for bathrooms, laundry rooms, and basements. Luxury vinyl flooring has a plastic core that does not absorb water, so a spill or an appliance leak is a cleanup rather than a replacement. Luxury vinyl is also quieter and softer underfoot, while laminate tends to be harder and more prone to a hollow sound. Both print a wood or stone image on the surface; the modern luxury vinyl embossing is generally more convincing at close range.

Most single rooms are a one-day job once the material is on site and acclimated. A typical main floor of 800 to 1,200 square feet usually runs two to three days, including tearing out the old flooring and prepping the subfloor. What stretches the schedule is almost always what is underneath: an uneven slab that needs leveling compound, or old adhesive and tile that has to come up first. Unlike hardwood, there is no sanding or finishing stage, so you can walk on luxury vinyl the same day it is laid.

Luxury vinyl can go over a sound, flat, well-bonded surface such as concrete, plywood, or existing ceramic tile, provided grout lines are filled and the whole floor is flat within the manufacturer’s tolerance. It should not go over carpet, cushioned vinyl, or anything soft or loose, because the give underneath will work the locking joints apart over time. Going over existing tile also raises the finished floor height, which affects door clearance and transitions into adjoining rooms. We check flatness and moisture first and tell you which approach the specific floor will support.

The plank itself is waterproof — standing water will not swell or ruin it the way it ruins laminate or hardwood. The floor as a system is water resistant rather than sealed: on a click-together floating installation, water can still find its way down through the seams to the subfloor if it is left to sit. So it is an excellent choice for kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, and basements, but a leak should still be dried up rather than ignored. For a genuinely sealed wet area like a shower, tile with a waterproof membrane is still the right build.

Cost comes down to the square footage, the grade of material you choose, and the condition of what is underneath. Thicker planks with a heavier wear layer and attached underlayment cost more per square foot but hold up far better in busy households and rental properties. Subfloor work is the variable that moves an estimate the most — a flat, clean slab installs quickly, while leveling, moisture mitigation, or removing glued-down tile adds labor.
